A quick update on my situation: I played all day today without a crash or any other issue (won my first game in fact). The trick for me, as noted above, is to launch the game without the EGS. There is a 45 second youtube video on how to do that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB1UTRPKN0U. Not only did my "memory leak" go away, but I was able to turn back on unit animations. Anyways, YMMV of course. But this worked for me!
